Was a great swamp until 150 years ago. Whole lowland became a lake when the mississippi river would rise above its banks. Mississippi bluffs: chain of cliffs along the eastern shore of mississippi. Have a parallel chain on the other side: would flood and deposit more muddy sediment each time creating bluffs. Lower mississippi river: the black belt. Wide tract of land extending across the central portion of the state.
