Apprentices/duty boys: young boys as young as 9 years of age, worked 7 years, worked another 7 years as bondship (worst deal) Tenantry: sandys introduced reform that included tenantry, worked 7 years and received of economic value. White servant labor worked will but when mortality rates declined, slave labor became popular. When servants lived 7 years they could become free. Freedmen- number of them grew and became new social class and they wanted to start own business and grow more tobacco. Needed land and more labor; supply of white servant labor was drying up.
