Women and children at war: merging of gender roles. Confederate households required to become hives of manufacturing due to union blockade. Made clothes and shoes for men, children, and slaves. Purpose was to create clean and healthy conditions in the union army camps. Becomes union"s superintendent of female nurses during the civil war. She only accepted women over the age of 30 and plain looking to prevent romance. Nurses could only wear black or brown skirts. Nurses received dollars a month plus rations. Dedicated herself to helping soldiers on the front lines. Became the lady in charge of field hospitals. A bullet tore through her dress and killed the men she was tending to. Commissioned in the military army of captain of the cavalry. When she passed away she was given a military funeral. Told them to repress grief, suffering, sacrifice, and shame. Created a network of spies made up of former slaves.
