The problem with these words is that they are so commonplace that they lose their power. Being free does not mean equal treatment. White, property, ideally elite, male, were treated truly free . Idea had been created by jefferson davis after the civil war. Union wanted to keep the states united/bound together. Confederacy did not agree with abraham lincoln becoming president. A lot of tension had been building up beforehand. 1850"s - huge fights over kansas/missouri whether they were free or slaves. Morality was questioned and thus was fought over. Even someone who was black and free could still not be a citizen until the union won. All southern states except virginia surrender (va surrenders after fort sumter) Peculiar means something that is dear and cherished. Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery. United states means war upon it, where it is, not where it is not.
