Lecture (2/8/16)- marvelous possessions: the wonder of the new world. Greenblatt is interested in the complex uses of stories. He will organize his book around representative anecdotes . Stephen greenblatt is a literary critic, not a historian: he isn"t interest in telling a grand narrative of history. He will asses the encounter between old and new worlds through a literary perspective. Tourist in bali (two anecdotal experiences in bali: vcr experience. Disappointment that his expectations of a traditional evening gathering aren"t met: felt like the western world had ruined their culture, recognized that he had jumped to an assumption that western devices must be used in western ways. Balinese adapted the vcr to their own cultural purposes: made recordings of their dances, watching and celebrating their own cultural traditions. Realizes that particular modes of representation are not inherently bound to a given culture or class system: vcrs are not exclusively for capitalist consumption.
