Scythian bowl: herodotus cannot say how large the scythian population is. Uses the bowl as an analogy: has heard of (maybe seen) a huge bronze bowl made of arrowheads. Each arrowhead represents one scythian: the bowl can hold 600 amphoras and is 6 fingerbreaths thick. Marvels (thoma: scythia has no marvels except for its rivers which are larger and more numerous than those of any other country. Don"t know what country he compares scythia to. Vague: marvels: things people have seen on their journeys (unusual sights/objects, talking about marvels makes a traveler"s tale believable. Invasion of scythia by darius (pg 83: herodotus returned to the narrative he digressed from on the 3rd paragraph, scythians learned that they would have to face darius" army, called on neighbors (tauri, agathyrsi, neurians, man-eaters, geloni, Budini and sauromatae) to help but they refused: herodotus described the attributes of these neighbors.
