Herodotus version of scythian eschatia: divided into different deserts, divided into different peoples. A system of northern peoples is elaborated. Goat-footed people, man-eaters etc: in herodotus" account, scythians become less wild as other wild peoples are portrayed. Herodotus" maps: rely on the principle of symmetry, heuristic. Helps to enhance study and understanding: heuristic value of symmetry. Allows one to make inferences based on analogy. Different elements of the map will be symmetrical to one another. One is the direct converse of the other. You can know things about one from the other. Both egypt and scythia: reject the greeks (nomoi- laws customs morals) Nomes and power: scythia is divided into nomes (administrative units) each with a nomarch at its head, in the histories three countries have nomes.
