The movie originally
• Christians say we created evil by virtue of free will and when we use it we chose poorly; free will
Theodocy; an attempt to reconcile the existence of evil with the goodness of God. This is an attempt to
solve the problem of evil or to define it(ex: free will theodocy)
Ridley scott is interested in doing is separating the creater and benefactor. Stating that our creater is not our
benefactor. “our creator does not care about us” ▯ hard to deal with is what Elizabeth shaw is going
through. When she meets the creator they try to kill them. Everything that she believed has been turned
So where did evil come from? Why did our good give us free will?
Theory is we inherit evil from our creator?
The creator race and human race decide to both kill with bioweapons.
Thomas Jefferson: deism ▯ he was a deist, which means they believe in a god but not in a religion. They
believe in the creator but they’re not part of our life anymore. Deists believe that there was a creator of the
universe but there’s no evidence that they still have a moral relation to us. Thought this was the best theory
because this is what reason reveals to us. Your reason will never suggest your creator is still around alive,
guiding you, no one is looking after you, and so on.He came up with deism, very popular in Europe. This
meant human beings could use their reasons to become like godlike and build our science/technology/”fire”
but we can’t live forever.
Peter wallen can’t buy a lifespan, he can be very rich. He comes to the planet because he thinks the
creator will and can give him a longer lifespan. Longer life is the one thing we can’t do. Bringing us closer to
the gods is always a gap because they are immortal and we’re not.
Elizabeth saw the prints and saw this as an invitation from the creators because this is the way she thinks;
she is a naïve idealist. She’s looking for some parent connection because mother dies young and
father dies from Ebola virus. She confuses the creator with the benefactors. She’s wrong because the
creators want to kill us. Genocide is the goal of the creators; Elizabeth wants to ask the creator
what it is about humans that commands the extinction.
Scientific exploration gets hijacked by other concerns; science is the most exemplary
enterprise given to humans ▯ peter wallen is not an idealist or scientist he’s just a rich old guy that wants to
live longer his purpose is pleasure and his motif is androids (david). David infects hallaway, hallway to shaw,
shaw incubates it and gets little aliens. Peter wallen wants to find a way to find alien life
form and use it as bioweapon (the same the engineers knew how to do). The android is
suppose to represent something peter doesn’t have ; immortalness yet the android
wants to have a soul and recognition of that. • Meredith vickus: she is incharge ▯ she’s cold and robotic, is she suppose to be presented like
this? Some people think her and David are related androids. Her relationship to peter wallen is how
she calls him father and calls him king and she in the one who inherits the cooperation;
she doesn’t want the mission to go good because she wants his fortune. Peter wallen is not proud of
her because he presents david as a son and doesn’t acknowledge her because he wanted a son to be
in control (someone like david) this leads us to conclude he is not proud of her and didn’t even want her
on the mission. She disappoints him because she doesn’t want to go meet the engineers, she has no
• Recognition: roy demands recognition. Philosophic astute to be able to catch an unsettlement of the
person. Blade runner stands out to us because it doesn’t occur to us that androids demand recognition;
Roy has probably entered the community of emotion which is unexpected. Example bf and gf where
one always demands more recognition “I want to be known for who I am and what I deserve to be
shown”. But what is surprising is our unwillingness to give it.
• Roy “meets his maker”, Elizabeth wants to do this and wants recognition. Shaw has a tendency of
treating her parent as a loving parents. But why wouldn’t the creators of liz be proud of her. This is
matched to a homecoming or a reconnection; she wants to see her creators and for them to be proud of
her she wants to know what they think of her… she wants to be reunited. To meet your maker means
“prepare to die”… shaw is looking for a kind of connection that is usually reserved for the dead. She
wants dead to become a part of life, now normally this doesn’t happen you must die. She’s a naïve
believer but she’s also a cheater she wants the insight that comes with death but she doesn’t want to
die getting it.
• Why would it be desirable? She wants to see paradise. To get paradise you must die. Peter wallen
wants to live forever and get the benefits from life while shaw wants the benefits from death but doesn’t
want to die. Shaw wants the benefits of the prepectives of those who have died. In methology there are
all these different stories of people dying and coming back which is usually viewed as transgression; a
movement beyond boundaries that is not yours to have. Ex: what would my grandma think of me know.
▯ we assume they see life as a whole; from a distance, yet we are stuck in the middle.
• David seems not to need recognition (android). He’s not asleep, he watches their dreams (one person
in particular; shaw) he knows things about them that no one else knows. But why does he care about
the dreaming? But he’s not interested in her dreams as a scientists but he’s interested because he
doesn’t dream. He also watches movies; Laurence of Arabia ▯ trained archeologist used for military. He
has a role model just like all of us do.
• Ridley scott likes to depict a yearning for human status; by depicting androids as they achieve
selfconsiousness. He is fascinated that our machines would like to like us but not be able to be
• Compare androids in blade runner and David in Prometheus
• David also colors his hair… why? Because they want to look better for others. He develops
human like qualities and capacity to become devious; he is more human than crew members
because all they want is money and don’t think much (2 dimensional). David wants to want
recognition, humans want it naturally.
• Why does peter wallen want to continue living? He wants to bring back the alien and make
weapons out of it 11/05/2013
• Wallen loves david like a son but what does that mean? He knows his daughter (Meredith) is
weak but no one else know; she wants recognition. Recognition is her weakness (she wants
his fathers recognition). In the scene where she tries to kiss him
