POLS 207 Lecture Notes - Lecture 28: Wield, Identity Politics, Tote Bag
Document Summary
People who have similar interest will come together and act in politics for their interests. Bringing together many different people and those that are in the same group will work together efficiently. People align themselves with what they agree with. Interest groups are affected by the underlying assumption that people work together because they have a common interest. Olson (1965) logic of collective action, recognized by political science. Pointed out the obvious thing, what is good for an entire group of people is good for its constituent"s individual members, but rational individuals will not contribute to a single good. Olson points out that people do not always want to work. People wait to profit by not having to do anything, they let others put in the effort. Leaders of interest groups have to get people to take action and do something. Leaders of the interest groups, regardless or specific or broad, they have to offer members selective benefits.
