The purpose of political parties is to attain office positions by attracting individuals to vote and place them in office. Major parties are those such as republicans and democrats; those that are able to win regularly; hold primaries and caucuses. Minor parties are those that are not particularly competitive or those that are not popular among the public. Between the republicans and democrats, there are certain regions that favor each party: Democrats: northeast, the pacific coast, and the rust belt. Republicans: the south and the mountain west .
