POLS 489 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Tactical Voting, Rational Expectations
Document Summary
Nomination process: who is on the ballot, structure of the ballot. Joint list is where the candidate is on both lists. Information the voter is supplied in the voting booth. Exclusive vs non-exclusive vote: does your vote affect the outcome of another election or political aspect. District magnitude: number of representatives that can be elected to a single district. Primary vs secondary: primary one round of voting (one vote for locality, secondary multiple voting (multiple votes district, locality, nationally) Can make it easier for smaller parties to have more or less representation depending upon the remainder of votes. Small problem in a large voter base but in a small election this can be come more complicated or more difficult. The larger the party or voter base the easier. Political party cartels (run independent parties, then combine after the election, declare collaboration after the election)
