PSYC 107 Lecture 18: Learning Continued #3
Document Summary
A process of behavior modification in which a subject is encouraged to behave in a desired way through positive and negative reinforcement. Product of reinforcement (want a behavior to continue) Can be positive or negative, but always unpleasant. Positive punishment punishment of a response by the application of an unpleasant stimulus: example: getting a spanking for coloring on the walls. Negative punishment punishment of a response by the removal of a pleasant stimulus. Example: losing your car for breaking curfew, being grounded. Punished behavior is suppressed, not forgotten: may dicriminate when they can get away with behavior. Teaches what not to do, but not what to do: often caused rapid decrease in motivation and creativity, undermines parent-child (or human-animal) bond. Can be effective when punishing agent is: often mildly aversive, used sparingly and only with great care. Immediately following behavior it is meant to punish. Paired (when possible) with reinforcement of correct behavior (what you want to happen)
