The first and second waves got about halfway across the valley and then were held up by machine gun fire from the three sides that resulted in an awful loss. It was hilly country with plenty of brush, and the germans had plenty of machine guns entrenched along those commanding ridges. The germans strategy was concrete as they were shooting straight. Also, something happened to his divison"s artillery and they had no barrage. Hence, resulting in a weak attack from his side. He tried to get them by a surprise attack in the rear as he knew his platoon will not go on until those machines guns were mopped up. 17 of his platoon members went around on the left flank to see if they could put out those guns out of action. As ordered by sergeant harry parsons, they advanced through the front line and and on through the brush up the hill on the left.
