In societies, the social classes, private properties and states were absent: because of very little surplus. Little surplus produced because of limits of forces of production (skills, tools) Surplus: includes goods that remain after those not needed for consumption/survival and are distributed. Classes in primitive were separated between men and women: men were hunters, women were gatherers and caregivers. Transition began when one group had more control over surplus. 1st mode of production referred to as ancient, which was the 1st class structure that was based on master-slave relations. State also appeared: rome and greek city-states. In roman state, wealth not valued for own accumulation, but private enjoyment: to spend, not save, value based on how you can demonstrate recreation/entertainment. Fought over land for raw materials : people for slaves, for labor power to then produce more surplus for dominant class which was based on military. Marx says: disintegration of roman empire formed the basis of feudal society.
