VTPB 405 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Peripheral Membrane Protein, Pseudopeptidoglycan, Hopanoids
Document Summary
Morphology refers to the shape of the cell. Unusual shapes: spirochetes, appendaged bacteria, and lamentous bacteria very diverse, but the shape of these bacteria play no role in how they work or function. May be selective forces involved in setting morphology These bacteria/prokaryotes are so small because this works to their advantage in surface area relative to their volume. Their small size allows them to uptake more nutrients and to grow faster than larger cells. Cytoplasmic membrane utilizes selective permeability; enables concentration of speci c metabolites and excretion of waste products. Even though this is the cells division from the outside, it is fairly weak. Hydrophilic region is outside while the hydrophobic region is inside. Peripheral membrane proteins- only a portion is anchored within the membrane but the other part works around the membrane. Archaeal membranes can be found to only be monolayers instead of bilayers. These monolayers are composed of ether linkages in phospholipids.
