Document Summary

Chemical energy is a kind of potential energy. 1st law of thermodynamics- conservation of energy. 2nd law of thermodynamics- universe is trending to disorder and all energy. Gibbs free energy (g = deltah - tdeltas) G = available energy or useful energy. H = enthalpy, or total energy of the system. Bond breaking is endothermic, bond forming is exothermic. Cellular respiration is exergonic - enthalpy decreases since energy is released, and entropy increases. Photosynthesis is endergonic- we get the activation energy from the sun. Phosphorylation- atp h2o adp + p + energy is exergonic and releases energy. Energy released as heat increases motion of particles and increases entropy. Usually converted from more useful form to less useful form like heat. Work in = work out + heat. Complex structural order is created given the 2nd law of thermodynamics by making surroundings less ordered and increasing heat/disorder in the environment. Delta g is change in free (useful) energy.
