Document Summary

A significant dysfunction in an individual"s cognition, emotions, or behaviors (or any combination of these) Disorders are diagnosed when there is a dysfunction, behaviors which are considered maladaptive because they interfere with one"s daily life. Disorders are diagnosed when the symptoms and behaviors are accompanied by distress, suffering. Three major models in the history of diagnosing and treating psychological disorders. The early model (not active today in most parts of the world) Based on older/antiquated understanding of psychological disorders, pathology resulted from spiritual abnormalities. Treatments have included: exorcising evil spirits, beatings, caging/restraint, etc. (inhuman practices) The discovery that the disease of syphilis causes mental symptoms suggested a medical model for mental illness. Psychological disorders can be viewed in terms of psychopathology, an illness of the mind. People with disorders can be treated, attended to, given therapy, all with a goal of restoring mental health. To study a disorder and count cases, we must first name and describe it.
