BIOL 3327 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Afferent Arterioles, Nephron, Diuretic
Document Summary
Because of the cortical and juxtamedullary nephrons in the medulla we maintain a high salt content in the kidney. We have vessels in the bowman"s capsule (glomerulus) where it looks like duck lips and the nephron. Each of the millions of nephrons are wrapped around with blood vessels. So when we say the blood secretes into the kidney and also reabsorbs out of the loop of henle, we"re talking about ions going out of the nephron right into the vessels. Up at the top, we have full blood pressure, pushing blood in through the afferent arteriole. Blood goes in through the afferent, and we"re pushing out the solutes. Whatever doesn"t go in (rbc"s, large fluids), goes out the efferent. Work in the renal tubules of the nephron. They all have specific segments that they work on because there are specific transporters in those segments.
