Document Summary

2 major complications of chronic acid secretion. Abnormal reflux of gastric contents from the stomach into the esophagus. Sphincter usually prevents the acid from getting out of the stomach. Common medical condition: 10-20% of adults in western countries experience gerd episodes. Symptoms include: heartburn, dyspepsia (bloating), belching, chest pain. A benign lesion in either the stomach or duodenal mucosa and it occurs because the mucosal epithelial is exposed to gastric acid and pepsin. Nsaids inhibit the normal production of mucosa (protective layer in the stomach) so individuals may be more susceptible. Results from a defective lower esophageal sphincter pressure or function. The esophageal sphincter is a small muscle to prevent the reflux of acid into the esophagus. Some medications or foods reduce the function of the sphincter. Spicy foods, acidic foods (og), some medications. Not life threatening, but left untreated it can lead to a premalignant change in the esophagus lining.
