Solitary confinement, inmate labor in cells, enforced silence at all times, pains/losses of imprisonment emphasize. Issues with inmate abuse, mental illness, suicide, and it was not a financially viable institution. Solitary confinement in the evening only, silence was expected, but not always enforced. Emphasis on profit making so it could maintain itself. Obedience: if you follow the rules inside, you"ll follow the rules outside. Equal treatment of all prisoners regardless of crime. Strict regimen (white/black striped uniforms, food control, beating, lockstep marching. Emphasized behaviors thought to encourage law abiding (hard work, religious instruction, penitence, obedience) Enslavement had an influence on correction, blacks not typically incarcerated b/c it would take them off the plantation. Black codes->set of rules that organized black life in the south that could result in jail time->new system of criminalization.
