What is a meme? any idea, belief, or behavior that can spread: survive and replicate through the network and flow of data, access them through screens. Most people would rather be entertained than enlightened. The matrix: brilliant in its non-originality, themes and memes have appeared before in previous movies. Told in new way: the choice: think for yourself, think deeper. Hyperreal are signs and symbols of the real are substituted for the real: matrix the map has overtaken the territory. Baudrillard"s map: a queen/king wanted map of entire empire, bring in best mapmakers bring it in, looks good. King and queen thought it could be even better w/ detail: eventually, the map was a perfect representation of the territory. Map was so big, life-size, became the dominant reality. People use media for an average of 11 hours a day. Microcosms of hyperreality: cowboys stadium, las vegas, times square, disney. Media as a map: media maps are overtaking the territories.
