Document Summary

Pain is highly complex and subjective experience that originates from the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, or both. Nociceptors - specialed nerve endings designed to detect painful sensations. Transmit sensations to central nervous system , can be stimulated directly by trauma or injury or secondarily by chemical mediators released from site of tissue damage. Nociceptive pain develops when nerve bers in the cns and pns are functioning and intact. This type of pain starts outside of the nervous system from actual or potential tissue damage. Neuropathic pain differs from no inceptive pain in that the message that has been sent to the brain has been damaged resulting in abnormal processing of the pain message by the brain itself. It is very dif cult to treat this type of pain. Visceral pain originates from larger interior organs (kidney, stomach, intestine, gallbaldder)
