ENGL 317 Lecture 10: week 1 - how to conduct group discussions

Week 1
1. What ground rules would you set for a class discussion? Present a minimum
of three and prioritize them.
a. Speak and let everyone speak. When one student has shared his views about
the topic under discussion, he/she should sit patiently and let the other students
reflect upon it.
b. Speak no hate. If one’s speech requires the use of racial words for the purpose
of education or speech, he/she should avoid using the actual racial slurs and
use an alternate word that has a less sever connotation. For example, saying the
N-word is better than saying the actual word, say, “people belonging to the
LGBTQ” instead of calling them “dykes” and then backing it up by saying
“it’s my freedom of speech”. The connotation is a huge aspect of a speech. One
must choose his words carefully so that he can get a point across without
hurting himself and others.
c. Bridge to peace. The professor in charge should stay attentive at all times.
He/She should act as a bridge between the accuser and the targeted student and
prevent the debate from getting out of control.
2. What is the role of a facilitator during a class discussion?
The facilitator has the most important role in a class discussion. He should set the
ground rules in simple and clear words way ahead of the discussion and be clear of
the consequences for violating any of the rules. His opinions regarding any topic
should not be biased based on how he personally feels about the topic. Unless it’s
towards the liberal side of the conversation.
3. If we institute a number of rules for class discussions, would there be
a penalty for violating a rule? If so, what would that penalty be?
Everyone should be given three chances to abide by the rules. If someone violates
the rules more than three times, then he/she shouldn’t be allowed to participate in
the discussion. If the student keeps on interrupting the class or tries to get physical,
then he should be asked to leave the class peacefully or it could lead to possible
deduction of few points on the midterm.
