PSYC 405 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Substantia Nigra, Movement Disorder, Enteric Nervous System
Document Summary
Nearly one million people in the us have pd. There is a 2 to 4% risk for pd in those over age 60, Thus, appears more common in men than women. However, there are treatment options for the symptoms. Pd primarily affects neurons in the area of the brain called the substantia nigra. Nerve cells use dopamine to help control muscle movement. Pd takes place when the nerve cells that make dopamine are slowly destroyed. Without dopamine, the nerve cells in the substantia nigra cannot properly send messages. We don"t know why these brain cells waste away (yet ) Earliest signs of parkinson"s are found in the enteric nervous system. Pd symptoms begin in medulla and olfactory bulb (sense of smell), and gradually reach the substantia nigra /striatum. Non-motor symptoms, such as a loss of sense of smell, hyposmia, sleep disorders and constipation.
