The babylonian captivity was a period from 1309-1377 during which the papacy moved from. Rome to avignon and was for all intents and purposes held there by the french kings. Following the death of pope boniface viii (1294-1303), french influence among the college of cardinals began to grow. Boniface"s successor, benedict xi reigned less then a year dying in the summer of 1304 after eating a poisoned fig. The papal throne remained vacant unitl november 14, 1305 when a frenchmen, was elected pope taking the name clement v (1305-1314). He was consecrated at lyon under the watchful eye of philip iv and in 1309 formally moved the papal curia from rome to avignon. During this period the french had virtual control of the papacy. This does not mean however that the papacy did not, in many ways, prosper. The internal machinery of the roman church grew more and more sophisticated during this period.
