Test age groups – middle schoolers versus high schoolers; allows testing over time Track GPA over time Two different (but similar intellectual level) groups, one allowed to go on Facebook and one control group not Presence of shortcut key, bookmarks bar versus none Surveys in the field versus controlled experiments Science of social psychology 1. State the problem 2. Formulate hypothesis 3. Design study and collect data 4. Test hypothesis with data 5. Submit study results to scholarly article IV – variables manipulated by researcher assumed to produce changes in participant attitudes/behaviors DV – represents the outcome of psychology processes Operational definitions – theoretical constructs defined in observable, measureable terms Theoretical construct = intelligence, academic performance Operational definition = performance on a general knowledge test Construct validity of the IV IV represents theoretical construct/stimulus DV represents theoretical response Research design Random assignment & researcher control allows for conclusions about the causal relation
