Centre pompidou, richard rogers and renzo piano, paris, 1972-1976. Contemporary art museum - all sorts of media and temporality. Designed as a competition entry when architects were students. All structural and mechanical systems deployed on exterior of building. Not a great idea with weather and maintenance. All structural components have to enter through glass skin: glass protected and sealed to prevent parts from moving and cracking glass. But: big open plaza slopes from street level to rez de chauss . Start building at top, while experience processes down. Escalators on exterior, within tube mooo (sense of cows to slaughterhouse?) Fully movable interior because of exterior structure and trusses. Super flexible but you have to be constantly moving things, so it gets too expensive. Hong kong & shanghai bank, by norman foster, hong kong, 1979-1986. Wanted to make clear that hong kong was a world financial capital. Building parts made all over the world, none in hong kong.
