Language lifespan is to emerge, thrive, and die out. Language tree; 15 language families (shared but distant origins), there are several languages in a single family. French is commonly used as a second language in government, business, or higher education. English is primary as a result of colonization and globalization. Languages are threatened as there are thousands of them, but many are only spoken by very few. State boundaries and realm boundaries are not always the same. Sovereignty; government rules supreme within its borders, recognition of this can be changed during conflict and war (usually sovereignty is recognized by other states) European state model; assumed a state would territorially match a cultural nation as a nation- state. Notion of the modern state is challenged from bellow by ethnic minorities and from above by international integration. Geopolitics; implies geography plays a major political role. Growing terrorist groups have challenged the integrity of many states.
