Document Summary

Bsc 300 lecture 3- the four types of biological molecules ii. Proteins are polymers of amino acids and form a diverse group of macromolecules. Amino acids have an alpha carbon, an amine group, a carboxyl group, and a variable r group. Protein amino acids in nature occur as l stereoisomers. Amino acids are linked together by peptide bonds into a polypeptide chain to make a protein. Amino (n) terminus- end of chain w/ free amino group. Carboxyl (c) terminus- end of chain w/ free carboxyl group. Peptide bonds form between the alpha-carbonyl and the alpha-amino of participating amino acids. Amino acids differ in the r group attached to one of the bonds of the alpha-carbon. R groups may be polar charged, polar uncharged, nonpolar. Polar charged- contain r groups that act as stronger organic acids or bases. Can form ionic bonds due to these charges. Exception: histidine- usually only partially charged at ph 7.
