CTD 261 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Starch, Denim, Ring Spinning
Document Summary
Yarn: constructed assemblage of textile fibers which act as a unit in fabric formation. Staple fibers twister together staple yarns. Filament fibers laid side by side, with some twist applied multifilament yarns. Strips made by lengthwise division of a sheet of material split film. Twist in staple yarns are given in units of turns of twist per unit length, either per inch (u. s. ) or per cm. (europe, asia) Yarn properties are affected by degree of twist, but not direction of twist. Spun yarns: continuous strand of fibers held together by a binding mechanism made from short fibers. Fuzzy fiber ends protrude along length of yarn. Low twist yarns separate easily with force. Yarn strength is not related to fiber strength. More comfortable when in contact with skin. Less area of yarn in contact with skin = more comfortable, less confining. More likely to create problems with soiling.
