CTD 261 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Organic Cotton, Lignin, Coir
Document Summary
Grade: color of fibers and the absence of dirt, leaf matter, seed particles, tangles, more or dead fiber, 39 grades. Mote does not absorb dyes, cause defects in fabric. Character: other fiber aspects, maturity, smoothness, uniformity, fineness, strength, convolutions. A polymer of glucose monomers, belongs to the carbohydrate family. The degree of polymerization of glucose units in cotton cellulose is about 10,000. The rings are stiffer than straight chains and form a regular pattern of repeating units. The oxygen bridge allows rotation of the chain. Because of the regularity of the chain, and the hydroxyl groups, the chains pack together in a regular manner, thus creating areas of crystallinity. Aesthetics: many options (fiber maturity, yarn, fabric, & finish) Durability: medium strength (30% stronger when wet); moderate abrasion resistance, low elongation. Comfort: absorbent, good heat & electrical conductivity; heavy. Poor elastic recovery and poor resilience are responsible for wrinkling of 100% cotton apparel.
