In the early 1600"s they had a large commercial presence. 1621- dutch government charters the dutch west india company. New netherlands was the name of the colony ran by the corporation. 1626 they decided to create an outpost/hq and buy manhattan island. Colony offered a lot in regards to personal freedom such as religion.
