1/19/17- profit and providence in north america: virginia/massachusetts as colonial models. William berkeley decides to respond to the indian conflict. Creates forts along border of colony and native americans. Nathaniel bacon was a wealthy man, bought a plantation. Grew to despise the wealthy elite who also ran jamestown. Also dislikes the indians, wants to kill them/run them out. Bacon despised this group of individuals and rallies support from settlers and such. Spring 1676 they decide they are going to declare war against the indians. Berkeley denounced bacon as a rebel and ordered his capture. By summer 1676 he has 1,300 people. Tyranny hits jamestown and berkeley burns place to the ground. October 1676-bacon dies and british ships come to reinforce authority. Berkeley is renounced by brits due to violent hangings. Reformed by getting rid of corruption, aggressive indian policy, and lower taxes. Major change is planters stopped using indentured servants.
