Cities grow- such as savannah: access to consumer goods. Comes with the development of the railroads. Slaves were identified in many ways, but the most identifiable is the way that they are dressed; they are wearing the cheapest kind of clothing possible. A store owner can deny someone the right to buy something- thus controlling the rise (or lack there of) in the social status. Railroads make it harder for people to segregate by customs. White church, black church, white hotel, black hotel, but there cannot be a white railroad or a black railroad. Railroads are divided by how much you can pay. Ladies car clean railroad car, velvet seats, the windows open, etc. It was intended to be the white"s car but when blacks begin to make more money and wear nice clothing, they start to sit in the ladies car tickets. Railroads complicate segregation; first segregation laws come about.
