World war ii diplomacy and the origins of the cold war. Has its roots in wwii: war in europe. Fdr is very anxious to get involved in europe. North africa invaded in november 1942: the big three alliance: united states, great britain, soviet union, opening the second front in europe. D-day 1944 (two years after we declare war)- normandy. Germany is quickly collapsing after a year and a half; the european war is slowing down in the late winter of 1945: yalta conference, 1945. Decide, what is going to happen in eastern europe? . Will they be democratic? will they choose their own government? . Yes- there will be elections and hopefully democratic government will evolve. Soviet union decides that once stalin in dead and buried, soviets will join the war. Eventually, poland does become the soviet"s puppet state no free elections. Fdr dies in april 1945; he was in his fourth term as president.
