Grandparents today: approximately 75% of americans over 65 have living grandchildren, 94% of all older adults with children are grandparents, and about 50% of these are great grandparents. Contemporary societal factors influencing grandparenthood: longevity: means longer grandparenting and great grandparenting, reduced overlap between parenting and grandparenting cycles of life. Contemporary societal factors influencing grandparenthood: divorce: can influence how much the grandparents get to see their grandchildren either positively or negatively depending on the circumstances. Contemporary societal factors influencing grandparenthood: geographic mobility. The meaning of grandparenting to grandparents: being a valued elder, self-indulgence. Interaction partner: cognitive and social stimulation, participation in mutual activities, surrogate parent: accessibility: on call support, modeling, responsibility and opportunity: provision of emotional, physical, financial, informational help to parents, influence on marriage. Age of grandparenting: generally, in this culture, women become a grandmother between 49 and 51 years old, and men become grandfathers between 51-53 years old, many people are grandparents early, however, sometimes in their 30s.
