BIO 200 Lecture 18: Lecture 18 part 1
Document Summary
Animal diversity: traits of all animals, animal body plan, new (dna based) animal tree. Lophotrochozoans (pt 1: traits that unify animals. Animal body plan: symmetry: sponges lack true sym. Sensory organs cluster in ant end: dorsal: back, posterior: tail, ventral: belly, anterior: head, embryonic tissue layers. Diploblastic: animals w 2 layers undifferentiated tissue [sponges;jellyfish] Endoderm= inner layer forming digestive organs + intestines. Triploblastic: w 3 layers embryonic tissue [most animals] Bilaterians= hella monophyletic; share bilateral cns and 7+ shared hoc genes. Acoelomate: no enclosed body cavities (no coeloem) Pseudocoelomate: filled w mesoderm but no mesoderm around internal organs (organs in cavity; not lined in muscle) Animals gain turgidity bc filled w fluid formed coeloem. Movement of fluid allows muscles to move forward: circulatory. Coelomate: coelom and internal organs all surrounded by mesoderm. Body cavity w muscle lining inside and outside organs. Redundancy of function: repetition of organs so if 1 injured; not too awful.
