NTR 108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Cancer, Benign Tumor, Prostate Cancer
Document Summary
2nd leading cause of death (1st:hear disease) ---elderly. 1/4 people will develop cancer (lifelong rate) Cancer: cells muliply out of control and disrupt normal funcioning. Tumor: rapid and/or uncontrolled increase in number of cells. Cells adhere to one another surgery remove easily: do not invade into other issues. Resists treatment (radiaion/surgery/medicaion: harmful cells don"t adhere; invade surrounding issues. Carcinogenesis: carcinogen (iniiators)---damage cell dna----cancer causing substance (iniiates cancer) Carcinogenic chemicals (carcinogens: natural and syntheic air pollutants b) c) Alcohol: high estrogen levels obesity, dietary fat, directly associated with colon cancer (perhaps breast cancer and prostate cancer, does not iniial cancer (not carcinogen)---appears to promote by: ----causing the body to secrete more hormones (estrogen) which creates a favorable environment for cancer growth. ----promoing the secreion of bile acids into the intesine which microorganisms may convert to carcinogens in the colon. ----incorporaion into cell membranes; altered membrane have increased suscepibility to carcinogenic invaders.
