Research approaches in abnormal psychology: want to avoid misconception and error, must adopt a scientific attitude and approach to the study of abnormal behavior. Individuals who are similar in their behavioral abnormalities. A study group should mirror the underlying population. Statistical significance: research uses statistical analyses to determine if numbers are really different and if change has really taken place. The scientific method: perceive a question, state a clear theory. Theory- an organized set of principles that describes, explains, and predicts behavior: a good theory. Organized many observations and makes clear predictions: form hypotheses. Hypothesis a testable prediction, desired from a theory: test those hypotheses by collecting data, evaluate the theory/draw conclusions, share/report the results publish them in a journal. Correlational design determine the relationship between 2 variables. Epidemiological research the branch of medicine that deals with incidence, distraction, and possible control of diseases and other relating factors relating to health. Comparative treatment research comparison across different cultures: genetics research.
