Document Summary

Treatments are effective when the treatment is more effective than the placebo. To determine if treatments are effective: need to directly compare treatment versus the placebo, use 2 groups of people: 1 group receives treatment & 1 group receives placebo. Double-blind design: one method of testing treatment effectiveness, double-blind procedure. Single-blind design: participants are unaware if they are receiving treatment or placebo but the experimenter is aware (not blind ) Methods for collecting data: main methods for collecting data, correlational studies, cross-sectional studies, experimental designs/ ex post facto designs. Correlational studies: the relationship between 2 variables: researchers can identify factors that are related to each other, correlations are measured by a correlation coef cient; can range from -1 to 1, correlations have two components: Cross-sectional studies: conducted at one time point and examines different age groups: aids in the study of developmental issues.
