PSYC 2031 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Lateral Sulcus, Medial Longitudinal Fissure, Basal Ganglia
Document Summary
Everything you see on the outside of the brain is the cortex. Subcortical systems are the collections of brain systems that work in some way for a common function. Made up of: caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus. Help control voluntary movements can increase or decrease motor output. Damage to basal ganglia structures may cause extra movements that aren"t wanted, i. e. excess arm movement. Associated with emotions generally, well known for roles in aggression behaviors and fear. Can respond to amygdala activating before you are even aware of what it is responding too: hypothalamus. Maintains homeostasis/body"s steady state: cingulate cortex. Dorsal to corpus collosum: anterior thalamus. This is the front region of the thalamus: mammillary body. This is the bumps and grooves seen on the surface of the brain. Each convolution or bump or raised part is a gyrus. Each valley between bump is called a sulcus. A very deep sulcus is a fissure.
