Positivist theories divide us into us vs. them . Positivists can"t explain why we would join in looting. Deterrence and death penalty came back, conservatives became more dominant. Don"t do the crime if you don"t want to do the time. But softer human agency and bounded rationality, we all have capacity to do what we want to do, we always want to make best decisions for ourselves, but we can"t all the time. Women working and its consequences, when women work away from home, their homes are empty during the day which creates opportunity, more exposed to rape and murder. Crime: convergence in time and space of three elements. Not about a theory of offenders, but victimization and why it happens. Two ways to prevent crime (not necessarily criminals ) Change people, reduce motivation or improve controls, difficult. Change the situational determinants of crime to make it less likely.
