PROPERTY CRIMES
-Assault is most common violent crime (EXAM)
-Violent and property crimes have similar trends
-Property crimes are far more prevalent than violent crimes (occur when you’re not paying
attention)
Burglary
-Unlawful entry into a dwelling to commit a felony or theft
-Burglary is not against a person, but a place
-Most go unsolved (may know who did it, but no proof, no one there to catch them)
-Average burglar gets about $2,000 per job
-Most occur in the middle of the day because this is when no one is home
-Didn’t happen in the middle of the day in older times because women were housewives
-Most burglars are not strangers to the household
Larceny-Theft
-Taking someone’s personal property
-Not a violent crime because it is being done without another person’s knowledge
-Most prevalent among property crimes (EXAM)
-Among larcenies, motor vehicle theft is most prevalent, then shoplifting
-Why aren’t accessories taken from cars? A lot harder to take
-Many carried out by juveniles in groups
-Average dollar value stolen during theft is $1,000
Felony Theft Thresholds
-What dollar value is large enough to warrant prison?
-Wisconsin: $2,500
-New Jersey, Virginia: $200

-Thresholds were set in 70’s, since then we have been carrying more expensive things
Motor Vehicle Theft
-Theft of a motor vehicle
-Cars are highly desirable products, resale
