Rate has dropped dramatically overtime, likely do to sophisticated security measures. The unlawful taking, leading, or riding away from the possession or constructive possession of another. Covers most types of theft that do not include the use of threats or force. Grand or petty theft depends on value of the item at the time it was stolen. Purse snatching and pocket-picking can also be considered robberies because property is taken directly from the person. Most shoplifters are impulsive, few do it as a primary source of income. Rational choice theory: they shoplift because it"s an easy, low-risk crime for which there are abundant opportunities. Cultural criminologists argue the reward is more than just material gain, but also the sheer thrill of getting away with it.
