Can we build structures that can survive natural disasters? : yes, but costs a lot of money. Natural disaster when people are affected by nature. If you know the enemy, you can exploit and handle the enemy . Earthquake prevention put in expensive buildings, not parking garages . Definition: an earthquake is a trembling or shaking movement of the earth"s surface. What causes these movements: if you"re an ant and someone steps next to you, you feel the vibrations. Something causes the movement: answer: seismic waves (underground waves) which move as fast as a jet. Seismic waves move through the earth and are sinusoidal. Earthquake in 2011 in richmond va was 5. 8 richter small. Movement of magma into the crust in volcanoes create seismic waves. During eruptions these waves are measured by scientists to estimate things like when eruptions will occur. The tectonic plates are under tension and sometimes they move suddenly. P-wave primary wave, faster but less damage.
