Document Summary

Earthquake trembling or shaking of the ground caused by the sudden release of energy stored in the rocks beneath the earth"s surface. Seismic waves waves of energy released and sent through the earth when a rock breaks. Involves the sudden release of stored strain energy in the rocks, causing movement along a fault. Tectonic forces act on a mass of rock over many decades -> initially bends/stretches, but doesn"t break until a point is exceeded. Rock then breaks and an earthquake happens -> two masses of rock move past each other along a fault (vertical, horizontal, or both) Energy expended by moving the rock into new positions and by creating seismic waves. Release of energy between the india plate and burma plate. Inundation the distance from the shoreline to the limit of tsunami penetration. Run-up elevation the elevation above sea level of the water surface at the inland limit of inundation. Tsunami lost energy as it moved inwards.
