Civil war destroyed southern economy-fall of cotton industry affected northern manufacturing industry: rebuilding economies, rebuilding the union (politically and socially) 3 elements of reconstruction: political-reinstating the southern states, economic-preventing further collapse of nation"s economy and rebuilding the south, racial-moving forward from white supremacy. 3 phases of reconstruction: presidential (civil war-1867, radical (1867-1873, decline (1873-1877) Emancipation proclamation: january 1, 1863-only freed slaves in rebel states. Didn"t work unless rebel states were union occupied. A strategic move by lincoln because the british and the french were going to join the war effort with the south to keep the cotton industry. 13th amendment: january 31, 1865-passed the house; passed senate in 1864 but was rejected by the house: amendment was passed during lincoln"s reelection, gave slaves hope for a better life as free men/women. William tecumseh sherman: march from atlanta to the sea: burned southern buildings and crops. Goal was to destroy southern infrastructure: sherman liberated slaves in states he went through.
