Identities are historically unstable because it depends on context question. Meaning are subject to contestation as dominant groups attempt to maintain and strengthen their positions which less privileged groups challenge or adapt to their domination: constructing race. Scientists wanted to classify it based on phenotypical factors- So certain groups believed to posses differential physical and mental ability. Used to reinforce and establish differences between groups. They have failed to identify physical or intellectual advantages resulting from racial differences. Legally, de jure racism segregated african americans into (cid:862)sepa(cid:396)ate (cid:271)ut e(cid:395)ual(cid:863) institutions and public facilities. A series of social conventions and beliefs (de facto racism) positioned african american as inferior to white americans. Groups have interclass racial beliefs in relation to physical intellectual capaticte. These beliefs became naturalized= accepted the seeming truth of these ideas and would expect it from these people.
