Historically, sport has been a space for men to prove their masculinity- long residual. Men are presented as the norm within sport and physical culture. Women are affected by this and this has significant consequences: forced to degrade themselves to get attention- the sport illustrated swimsuit magazine, alienated from physical culture and from engaging in physical activity. Traditional analyses of power relations rend to privilege on dimension over all others in doing so, that dimensions is considered to be determinative of outcomes. Everything else doesn"t matter- we can reduce the politics to this: marxist political economy: class, women"s studies: gender, queer studies: sexuality- heteronormativity, african american studies: race. Intersectionality the theory of intersectionalists take a difference perspective as it focuses on the relationships between different dimensions of different identity and their impacts upon social relations. As a result, intersectionality does not consider any one dimension to be determinative on a priori basis, but looks at the contexts and circumstances.
