We assume the norm, generally adults, aka adult behaviors that do not include pathology. Triplett observed that when racing using time intervals vs. racing as a collective, people moved slower. Social facilitation- the principle that one performs a task better when in front of others. Correlational design (iv vs. dv) this was measuring, not manipulating therefore it is not an experiment, it is research. Triplett took young boys and split them in half, half with another bot present and half alone. He found that the boys who were reeling on the fishing reels did so faster while is the presence of another boy. This is an experiment because the situation/data was manipulated in order to reflect a wanted result. (not just measured data against data) The gestalt psychologist fled to america just as hitler came to power. The us wanted to understand social psychology and enlisted the gestalt psychologists to experiment and research.
